Pre one of the greatest and most exciting American runners died on May 29, 1975. The day before he ran an American record 12:51.4 against the best in the country at the time. At the time he held every American record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters – seven records in total. A feat never accomplished before or since. He was just 24 when he died.
